6 Things You Can Do To Improve Your Mood In 30 Seconds Or Less

By Karen Rae, Founder of Balanced Life by Karen Rae® and Creator of The Signature Balanced Life Planner®

Feeling blah, down, or simply just not in a good mood? It happens to all of us! There are moments in life where you may feel you have to have it all together, unsure of what your next step in life should be, or maybe you are just tired of your everyday routine. We can tend to get into a funk that may be hard to get out of. It’s normal for us to go through these mindsets and feel sad or down but what’s important is finding ways to get ourselves out of these moods. Here are 6 things that you can do to boost your mood in 30 seconds or less!

1. Talk to a stranger

Smiling, making eye contact, or casual conversation—instantly boosts your mood. So go ahead and chit-chat with your barista when you order your morning coffee.

2. Smile

You’ve heard it before, but we’ll say it again: Just smiling makes you feel happy. Even if you're by yourself, smile. How can you be sad when you're smiling? By making the intentional decision to smile, we are actually activating happiness inducing chemicals.

3. Lower your shoulders

Tension makes your shoulders creep up, take a breath and lower them.

4. Take a walk outside

Head toward the nearest park, just five minutes meandering in green spaces is a great pick-me-up.

5. Call a friend

Social connection is important for emotional well-being. The happiest people have strong social relationships.

6. Better yet, hug a friend

If you have a good friend in hugging distance, have at it. What's better than a good 'ol hug? Physical connection releases oxytocin, a hormone that gives us that warm, fuzzy feeling.

Give these 30 second mood boosters a try and practice them more than once. You’ll find that not only your happiness will increase, but also by knowing ways to improve your mood will strengthen your inner strengths such as independence, gratitude, eagerness and happiness!
